Lesson on Creating torrent and seeding

Talking a lot of topic about downloading, and now we will talk about how to be a seeder and share your file online using Bt. To create a torrent, we need trackers.

Here is an example of BT trackers:

http://tracker.prq.to/announce
http://inferno.demonoid.com:3389/announce
http://tracker.phogotorrents.com:2006/announce
http://altimit-dev.net:6969/announce
http://privatetracker.limitedivx.com:2710/announce.php
http://tracker.torrentbox.com:2710/announce
udp://tracker.bitcomet.net:8080/announce

and a lot more, where we can find from the torrent we downloaded or just do a search on google

Usually to create torrent, from the BT client go to File -> Create new Torrent (or CTRL + N).
Then select the files to seed and put on the tracker that's all. We can use more than one tracker at the same time. The more tracker we put, the more effective for other peers to track the seed. Many trackers are used because in case if one tracker goes offline or down then other tracker can still help to maintain the linking between the peers.

For further information: http://torrentfreak.com/how-to-create-a-torrent/

One more thing before I end my post is to talk about super seeding.

What is super seeding?

Super seeding is a feature that allows seeders who are the only seed in the swarm to solely seed pieces that are found nowhere else in the swarm . It is also known as initial seed in utorrent(To enable it just right click the torrent go to Properties and tick Initial Seeding). The super seeding client pretends not to be a seed, but pretends to be a peer with an incomplete file. Then the client shares with one peer only, usually the one with the fastest upload to others and that peer can then share that piece with the swarm. This allows the super seeding client to maximise the efficiency of the upload by only sharing those pieces nobody else has.

In conclusion, I think super seeding should be used only depend on the situation. Due to some other things about the behaviour of super seeding, this function does not work well in swarms with one peer and one seed only. So it is only good when the seeder is the only seed, and there are more than two peers. Therefore, it is bad and ineffective to leave it on all the time. Most good clients should switch it on only depend on the situation. Or else it may cause degradation on speed for everyone.

Windows Worm spread through BitTorrent

An emergent news come from torrentfreak saying that there is a Windows worm that infects WinXP is probably Vista also that spread through BitTorrent.

"The worm, W32/Impard-A, is a highly sophisticated program with multi-lingual support that can effectively spread itself, delete and send other, rival malware present on the computer back to its creator, and utilise BitTorrent in achieving its goal."
(Article from torrentfreak)

This worm will try to find BitTorrent client from the computer such as bittorrent.exe and if it finds the client it will then copy itself to a specific location and then start to seed itself through Bt. This make senses as:

"Why should the malware author waste bandwidth downloading his worm to thousands of Windows computers around the globe, when he can make his army of zombified ones redistribute it for him, free of cost?"
(Article from torrentfreak)

In conclusion, Bt technology now can even be exploit to help the virus maker to spread his virus anywhere while also SAVING his bandwidth. It looks very convenient for them with the help of Bt technology. If they still continue exploit the advantage of Bt, maybe one day all ISP will ban BT forever for sure. Let's pray that wouldn't come through.

Beware when BT!!

Regarding some news information from Cnet News, I found out that nowadays BT is becoming more dangerous. Especially there is adware, spyware and worse virus is hiding inside the torrent files. Since, BT now is used widely around the world in sharing files. Some people exploit the use of BT technology to spread virus to BT peers.

Files like videos and music now may have adware and spyware hiding inside without notice by Bt leechers when they download it and it is globally distributed over the Bt web sites. Actually, BT is a virus free technology compare to P2P which is worse because it has no central search technology exists where the P2P software itself such as Kazaa have been already associated with adware and spyware. Therefore the only way to spread the adware and spyware is through hiding inside the torrent files.

In conclusion, the simple way to avoid these problems is to avoid download torrent sources from untrusted web site. We must also always check for the files that we have downloaded whether the file is in exe format or not from the torrent before we start downloading because it is obviously an executable virus. For example, if we are downloading movies, the extension must be in avi or rmvb those video format instead of exe. We must also not forget to scan for virus with anti-virus software after the download complete for safety purpose. It may be troublesome but for our computer safety wasting one or two minutes may save our computer from the evil adware, spyware or even the virus that may bring harm to our computer.

Way to bypass tracker error in BT

For those without VPN, we know that now TMnet not only restrict by speed, even the tracker is also blocked and always return Connection Closed By Peer error. Now there is a way to bypass it.

Step 2 :Install it, off all running program including the BT clients and then open PROXOMITRON. Below is the interface of the software:

(Click on the image to view larger size)
Step 3 :From the Edit Filters dialog box, click Headers
(Click on the image to view larger size)
Step 4: Scrll down and find User Agent: SpaceBison (Out) then click it on the Out Check Box
(Click on the image to view larger size)

Step 5:After finish setting the PROXOMITRON, go to the BT client and set the proxy server with

Type: HTTP
Proxy: localhost
Port: 8080
Remember to tick the checkbox of Using the proxy server for peer-to-peer connections
Below are example of utorrent client settings:
(Click on the image to view larger size)
In conclusion, I do not know how can this technique last long but TMnet sure would not just sit there doing nothing. They may then come out with some other new idea or technology to block us and throttle us again. May all the BT users with god speed~

Bad News about VPN Server

Nowadays, I found out my BT speed to be degrade at about 20~30kbps only whereas I normally can achieve as high as 70~80kbps. I send an email asking about the BT speed and the VPN provider reply me with the problem.

From the reply:

As the server is no longer located locally, the speeds for asian torrents is bound to drop somewhat. This is due to the TM Datacenter's new policy of jacking up the prices so it is no longer possible for me to continue hosting a server locally (at least not at RM30 rates). All shared servers are now capped at 2mpbs whereas dedicated would cost me around RM600/mb

I've noticed your IP 219.95.*.* which is probably why you are experiencing slow speeds. I could put you on any server in the world (except Malaysia) and you'd still get slow speeds. I'll repeat this again, Malaysian servers can no longer be used for VPN services due to the increase in prices over there and their implementation of capping on shared servers. I'm willing to host the VPN at a low profit but I'm unwilling to make a loss either, prices have shot up by more than 1000% (last time was on 100mpbs shared, now they asking for dedicated bandwidth to continue hosting). 1mbps at the datacenter will cost me approximately RM500 or more, how can I afford to continue hosting it?

In conclusion, although we get to use BT but still not that effectively. Seem like TMnet is trying to put a stop on P2P/BT in the near future. They are trying to cap the speed connecting to the international server and restrict us to as much as possible. Now even the TM new policy has make the server hosting price rising very high, it is giving most of us especially BT users a very hard life.

TMnet Blame Streamyx Broadband Users on P2P/BT Usage

TMnet is very unhappy with Streamyx Broadband Users who exploit and utilize most of their bandwidth. It has once come out on the news at TheStar.

"CYBERJAYA: Peer-to-peer (P2P) traffic is choking up local broadband lines with 20% of users utilising 80% of the total bandwidth, according to Internet service provider (ISP) TM Net Sdn Bhd.
Dr Fadhullah Suhaimi Abdul Malek, general manager of TM Net’s corporate and strategy services, said that as the number of local broadband subscribers increases, more users are expected to use P2P applications such as Kazaa and BitTorrent to transfer files online. "

"“We are not against our customers using P2P. However, it is an unfair situation which needs to be addressed, as we cannot upgrade our infrastructure (merely) for the benefit of the minority,” he said."

Article taken from: http://star-techcentral.com/tech/story.asp?file=/2006/3/1/technology/13540730&sec=technology

Actually, someone also agree that TMnet done the right job in order to maintain the services at the best condition for us. It may seem so unfair if someone else is sucking up all the bandwidth therefore affecting others connection to slowdown. If people only use the broadband to surf and find out that accessing the site is as fast as dialup speed, TMnet will then be blame for not providing them good connection speed.

In conclusion, I feel that TM Net regrets in its decision to offer unlimited broadband packages. I’m afraid TM Net will stop offering unlimited packages soon, and force all users to switch to time-based broadband packages. It may be fair for some user, but not for heavy downloaders. It is fortunate that now TMnet did not implement this measure instead they buy hardware from international country to throttle the P2P/BT traffic.

TorrentFlux - A BT remote control client

TorrentFlux is a FREE PHP based Torrent client that runs on a server. By using this BT client, user can manage their BT from anywhere through a convenient web interface created by TorrentFlux. It act as a remote control to download the torrent from a server.

We know that in Malaysia, we are throttled. But we can use the server from other country to do the dirty job for us. Therefore, host a server from other country and install TorrentFlux on it so we can use the server to BT. After that, all downloads end up on the server in a directory we specify. Once download is complete, we just connect via ftp to the server, and download the file via ftp. Since the server we obtain will definitely have limited space, therefore make sure to remove the file from the server once it is completed.

Advantages:

1) Very fast downloading speed from the torrent to the server. It is less than 20 minutes to download two 350mb files.

2) Off course fast download from server to user PC via FTP since TMnet does not throttle FTP.

Disadvantages:

1) May be expensive. Usually around US$6 per month for hosting. I suppose there might be some cheaper hosts some where, just surf the net for the best price. Choose the location for the hosting site well which depends on where the torrent that you most downloaded. If you always download asean torrent, then you might consider host a Hong Kong Server or even Taiwan. From my experience, the connection speed to Hong Kong is better then China therefore I would prefer HK.

2) Have to manage the bandwidth used. Since the bandwidth is limited, be sure to calculate everything before downloading or else the bandwidth is used up and no more BT can be done until the next month.

In conclusion, everything on Earth is not free. If we are willing to pay, we can get what we want.

If need more bandwidth, therefore have to pay more. This is the Golden Rule, no work no money.

Know our ENEMY!!

Getting some information from some site, I have found out that how TMnet actually implement their evil plan in order to block BT and also P2P on the net. In order to lower the priority of BitTorrent, TMnet have bought a special hardware from Cisco. The hardware is known as Cisco SCE 1000 Series Service Control Engine!!!

This is the tiny hardware that breaks the dream of BT users(Please remember it):

Cisco Service Control Engine with Cisco Service Control Application

This hardware is used to control the route with determining the types of data travelling over this hardware. TMnet sets the application of BT/P2P to low priority therefore resulting in poor speed for BT and P2P for Streamyx user in the whole Malaysia. This kind of hardware is install first in KL and now the whole Malaysia. If not mistaken, this hardware have 7 layer to reconstruct the flow of data. This hardware will re-categorized all types of data which passes through this hardware even though the data is already encrypted. Therefore, there are no ways for BT/P2P to break through this security level.

In conclusion, I know that TMnet buy this hardware is to make sure that all the Streamyx user would not run out of bandwidth since it promotes that Streamyx is unlimited access. But I think that TMnet should use the money to buy more bandwidth for us instead of just wasting money on these hardware to limit our bandwidth. If and only if, all Streamyx user cooperate and try to limit themselve on the bandwidth I sure that TMnet someday will remove the throttling and buy more bandwidth to us. Off course I know that something like this would not happen because most people are selfish user and try to consume up the bandwidth to the maximum~

A tip to remove limitation of BT download speed for WinXP SP2

In WindowsXP SP2, a security system is set to limit the number of possible TCP connection attempts per second to 10 as defaults. The purpose of doing this is to protect and reduce the threat of worms such as blaster spreading fast without control. Although this can reduce the risk of infected by dangerous virus, but on other hand that this feature also affect BT and other P2P programs that need to open many outbound connections at the same time. Which means that it will DEFINITELY influnce and cause slowdowns for the BT/P2P download speed.

However, there are still hopes for P2P/BT users! There comes a useful patch which available from LvlLord that can remove that annoying feature set by the Evil Microsoft. For WinXP SP2 users, it use Event ID 4226 Patcher to modify the value of half-open connections (SYN) in the TCPIP.SYS from the default of 10 to the number we want. For example, we can set to 150. Setting the value too high may be very dangerous which means that more virus you may be infected.

To get the patch, you can go to: http://www.lvllord.de/?url=tools
The instruction is very easy, apply the patch, confirm the modification when WindowsXP shows the alert message box, then restart the computer.

In conclusion, always try to make a backup of TCPIP.SYS before applying the patch. If anything unexpected happends, so that we can use back the backup file to replace it. Please use it at your own risk, and happy BTing~ ;-)

Simple Way to bypass the Throttle By TMnet

Everyone hates ISP that throttle BT. But there is one simple way to bypass it, and the solution is to use VPN which stands for Virtual Private Network. Virtual Private Network allow us to bypass our local ISP throttling via encryption. By using VPN, not even BT only user can also use any P2P without throttle. Off course that the bandwidth is not limited. Only one disadvantage is that we have to pay for the services, that's all but it is as cheap as RM 1 per day. Therefore, in my opinion I think that this RM 1 per day is worth for me to download anything I WANT with NO LIMITED of speed.

Moreover, with VPN we can routes all our traffic through the network no matter what application we use. Which means that we can also use the VPN for anonymous surfing, faster online gaming(since the VPN is very fast connection) and do a lot more stuff without having concern about our privacy problem. In addition, the data are encrypted and protected so that we will be safe from "sniffing" attack.

In conclusion, I think it is worth to use VPN especially for heavy dowloaders. After using it for a few month, the throttle of BT by TMnet means nothing to me and I can download happily whatever I want!!

Below are the list of company that provides VPN services.

TMnet IP that throttle BT

We know that our ISP TMnet, throttle BT to save bandwidth.
Below are the IP range that throttle BT:

219.95.xxx.xxx IP range that perm throttling BT(tracker fail even with PAW)
219.94.A/B.xxx Some NOT but some yes dont know why
218.101.xxx.xxx PERM ban BT (tracker failure even with P.A.W)
60.5xx.xxx.xxx Submited By dattebayo saying that this IP range ban BT
124.82.xxx.xxx submited by dattebayo
124.xxx.xxx submitted by benzene

More information: 219.95.xxx.xxx is a totally useless Ip range with slow connection and also throttling BT.

Below are the IP range that MAY not throttle BT:

60.48.xxx.xxx submitted by benzene
60.49.xx.xx work fine with PAW
60.50.xx.xx LWRNCH6550

In conclusion, when connecting to the Internet, the ISP will assign a random IP to the user. If the user is lucky, he may be assigned with the IP range that is not throttled. Therefore, try to re-connect a few times in order to obtain a good IP. Try to avoid getting the IP starting with 219.95 for better connection speed. I always end up getting that range of IP therefore making me very annoying when trying to connect to the international web sites.

For futher information in checking your IP:
There are two ways:

1) Click the Details tab of your current Dialer. For example:

Further information: Server IP is the IP we connect to obtain a client IP. 219.93.218.177 is for Streamyx and 219.93.218.176 is for Dial-up.

2) Just go to Start -> Run -> type cmd (For Windows XP User). In MS-DOS, type ipconfig
and find the IP address under your current PPP adapter.

BT in Malaysia

Most Internet users love BTing. Unfortunately in Malaysia, the BT activity is limited by the commercial ISPs(Internet Services Provider) in Malaysia especially the most popular ISP in Malaysia which is TMnet. It is known that TMnet have a limited amount of bandwidth to share among thousands or millions of users. BT usually consume a large amount of bandwidth. If every user uses BT, then it may result in giving the ISP a heavy traffic. Finally. everyone gets slow connection and it is unfair for those who did not uses BT. Therefore, TMnet comes out with P2P throttling in order to shape the P2P traffic especially BitTorrent!

Although TMnet is throttling BT, but user can still download from local peers with normal speed. Which means that only download speed are limited from international peers, and there are no influence with local peers. Moreover, upload is not limited by TMnet in the past but now it is which is too bad. The prove can be obtain from http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=380142 . As the same as download that, upload is also not limited for local peers which is mention later in the lowyat forum.

From this site, there are a list of bad ISP listed out that throttling BT. Malaysia is also included in the list.

(Table from www.azureuswiki.com)
From the table, we see that both ISP limit BT bandwidth.
Although it says no about the limitation of bandwidth for excessive usage, but actually it does.
It is proven by one of the Streamyx user who suffur the limitation of bandwidth due to excessive usage of bandwidth. This issue regarding to this matter is from Lowyat forum by CKKwan.

In conclusion, it is very sad that TMnet throttle the BT but some day I hope that Malaysia can give user chances to BT by upgrading their bandwidth and improve their services to make our lifes better. Long lives BT~

About BitTorrent influencing the hard drive - PART 2

We have talk about how the BT influence the hard drive. Now we will talk about what to do to minimize the damage done by BT.

1. Set higher Cache
BT have multiple line of download/upload, the Windows usual Cache 512KB is obviously to be not enough. If RAM is higher than 256MB, setting the Cache to a higher value can reduce the hard drive read/write frequency. Usually set at 8MB to 16MB have the best effect. 32MB is also possible if user have higher RAM. To set it, go to Start -> Run -> regedit and then go to this address:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet \Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\
After that, find IoPageLock-Limit(If not exists, create new one with type DWord) and set the value of the new Cache.
P.S. Have to enter value in hex format, such as 16MB=4000. It is recommended to make a backup first before modify.

2. Decrease Process Priority
BT uses a lot of CPU and Memory resources, when use it will definitely influence the computer. If user are using Windows 2000/XP, then it can use Windows Task Manager to lower its process priority. Then, even the BT client want to use more resources it will not affect other programs. To do this, use Ctrl+Alt+Del key combination then go to Processes and find the current BT client which is in use and right click -> Set Priority and click Below Normal or Low.

Here is the way we can protect our hard drive
1. Buy better quality hard drive
This is one of the basic solution. Never buy second hand hard drive! Be careful when choosing the right hard drive. If the quality of hard drive is not good, then it is obvious that the hard drive would not live long.

2.Use SATA instead of IDE
Since BT always read/write, therefore it is recommend to use SATA. SATA can read/write faster than IDE. Therefore, will work better when using BT.

3.Remember to always defragment the hard drive occasionally
BT always create pieces of files that may make the hard drive to read slower. Defragment hard drive can speed up the computer and making it last longer. The hard drive won't have to spin as much to find the pieces of files after it is defragmented. Therefore, defragment it occasionally will help to make the hard drive lives longer.

In conclusion, please be careful with your hard drive. Try to change it after used for 2/3 years. Maintenance for hard drive is neccessary to make our hard drive have higher lifespan. Thank you.

About BitTorrent influencing the hard drive - PART 1

BitTorrent is a good download tools, the more people download, the higher the speed is and is slowly accepted by people. But there is one big problem which is, will BT damage the hard drive?

Everyone knows that BT can provide very high download speed because when downloading at the same time, also provide uploading services to other peers who download the same torrent file. Therefore, the hard drive have to withstand 1 download and N-1 upload(which is you provide download services to other peers) at the same time. If there are Nx10 or Nx100 individual download at the same time, then it will bring very high usage to the hard drive and thus damage the hard drive.

The hard drive have a measurement which is call MTBF (mean time between failures). The MTBF is a rating used in the computer industry that attempts to predict the time between failure. Usually, normal hard drive have MTBF of at least 30000 hours, but the time we use BT is less than this time, so using BT may not have much effect to the hard drive. BUT, using BT in some degree will definitely decrease the hard drive lifetime. Hence, we must be very careful with the time when using BT and also implement some optimization measures so that this influence can be neglected.

In conclusion, please be very careful with BT. Do not ever be too optimistic that BT in very high speed is a good thing or else you will end up regretting that all of your precious data/information lost together with your hard drive which is very bad.

BitTorent Clients

We have talk much about BitTorrent and how it works.
Now is time to pick the right client in order to maximize the efficiency of BitTorrent. Therefore, can maximize the download speed with minimum memory usage. Some BitTorrent may eat up a lot of memory and may cause slow performance to our PC. Thus, choosing the BitTorrent client is a very important step. Moreover, the BitTorrent client should have the essential features needed by most users as so to make the users live much more easier.

There are a variety of BitTorrent Clients nowadays with most popular one. Below are the clients that i've used before base on my experience:

BitComet (www.bitcomet.com)
This is the first BitTorrent client that i've used for quite a time before utorrent. The interface is user friendly and the settings are easy to configure. Torrent are also saved in the folder torrent where the torrent file can be easily obtain if needed. BitComet is equipped with the essential features needed by most users. When user click on a specify torrent properties, the basic information are shown such as files, directory, and trackers. There is also an option that can set the rules to limit the upload speed for each torrent and the interface is easy-to-understand and maybe better than utorrent. However, the latest update has started to make the client goes worse as I use the 0.8 version. A lot of problems are encountered such as speed are very slow, error connecting to trackers, and much more. Therefore, the stable version would be 0.7.

uTorrent (www.utorrent.com)
This is the best Bitorrent client I would recommend for BitTorrent users and it is the client that I'm currently using. The performance of utorrent is the best of all. From the Windows task manager, I found out that the memory usage of utorrent is as high as 1X,XXXK only. Therefore, it would not slow down the computer performance and can continue to do other jobs such as playing other games while waiting for the utorrent to finish its downloads. In addition, I found out that download with utorrent the speed is much more faster and stable than bitcomet which means that it helps me to achieve the highest download speed. In my opinion, the interface of utorrent are still not that bad, but may still cause confusion for first time users. I was confused on changing the file download priority or sequence at the first time until I know have to click on the "#" button to re-order it. Again, utorrent also provide the essential features for the users, such as changing languages, creation of torrent, etc... I thing I like about utorrent is that it also shows the statistic of speed for upload and download. At the peers client, icon of country are also represented so we can know that most peers come from which country and the type of BitTorrent client are also shown with its version. Off course the peers download/upload rate are also shown too.

Azureus (http://azureus.sourceforge.net)
This is another one of the popular BitTorrent client around, which is made by java. To install it, Java JRE is needed which is quite troublesome. The good thing of this client is that it comes with a variety of plugins where it can add new features to the client. One of its useful features is that it can be control remotely(this feature requires to install additional plugins). If users are outside somewhere and would like to make the PC at home to download the torrent, this feature allow user to control Azureus through the Swing Web Interface or the HTML Web Interface. In other words, user can control Azureus remotely via browser. Azureus also have some other useful plugin such as auto-adjustment of the torrent upload and download speeds according to the network charge so to save more bandwidth for other torrents for example, speed can also be schedule according to how the user like and much more.

There are a lot more BitTorrent clients, the information about some other bittorent clients can be obtain from this web site: http://www.slyck.com/bt.php?page=2

In conclusion, I think that utorrent is the best because it perform its job efficiently with only consume a small amount of memory usage, and its process did not influence the PC performance. Most of all, the speed is high and stable which is what I concern the most. No one would like to download their files slow and steady, and that's why I choose utorrent!

Introduction of BitTorrent

Now, let start with the topic about BitTorrent. A simple introduction about BitTorrent. What is BitTorrent and how it actually works?

BitTorrent is a technology or a protocal that allow fast downloading and sharing of large files using the minimum internet bandwidth. Why is it using minimum internet bandwidth? Because users cooperate in the distribution of the file which means that user upload and download the file at the same time. As for the case of normal downloading such as FTP/HTTP download, the file is only transfer by the server, then if more users demand on downloading it may result in require more bandwidth. Therefore, bittorent is introduced.

Way that BitTorrent works

For bittorent to work, a tracker server and a seeder is needed. A tracker is a server that manages the BitTorrent file-transfer process and a seed/seeder is a user/computer with a complete copy of a file to be shared or distributed. As for the downloaders, which are known as leechers have to connect to the tracker in order to link with the seed. In BitTorrent, leechers will get higher download speed if they upload more. This is one of BitTorrent principal that solve the problem of leechers. Therefore, everyone with greater upload speed may speed up everyone download speed. Finally, to make better use of available Internet bandwidth (the pipeline for data transmission), BitTorrent downloads different pieces of the file the user want simultaneously from multiple computers.

This is the sample picture that shows about BitTorrent process:

In conclusion, I think that BitTorrent is very popular for sharing large files such as videos, games, etc. It is better than P2P because P2P software may have annoying advertisment, spyware and maybe the files would be very dangerous and easily affected by harmful viruses or trojans. BitTorrent is different because we may choose where to get the torrent file such as from trusted web site or forums and therefore will be save from harmful viruses, trojans and spywares. If the torrent file is shared from a forum, we may also get comments on the files by other users such as if there is virus in the file, users there will report to the moderator and they will get rid of it and give everyone warning about it as fast as possible. Therefore, comparing to other file sharing method such as P2P, BitTorrent is much more simpler, safer, faster and is the best of all file sharing methods.
That's all I can say about how BitTorrent works.
